February 2, 2009
The Association of Career and Technical Education has named February as National Career and Technical Education Month. Governor Crist is expected to issue an official proclamation to declare February as Florida’s Career and Technical Education month. Lake Technical Center has an advisory committee reception and meeting, as well as the first “Bring a Friend to School Day” planned for the month to promote the importance of career and technical education.
Lake Technical Center’s program advisory committees will meet Thursday, February 12, 2009, beginning at 6:00 p.m. in the main campus Student Center located at 2001 Kurt Street in Eustis. Students from the Commercial Foods and Culinary Arts program will display their culinary talents by preparing and serving appetizers and desserts. Students will also showcase their garde manger (vegetable and fruit carvings) skills.
The evening program will include a presentation from Donald L. Van Beck, Executive Director of the Veteran’s Memorial at Fountain Park, Inc., Leesburg.* The organization wants to thank the Architectural Drafting program for their work in creating the preliminary drawings for the memorial. Tracy Hofmeister, former student, and Donna Warren, Instructor, will be recognized with plaques. Ms. Hofmeister and Mrs. Warren collaborated from April to August on the project. The drawing is also being used as the organization’s logo on stationary and business cards. Both Ms. Warren and Ms. Hofmeister will have their names on the memorial to recognize their contribution.
Following the program, the advisory committees will meet in their given program areas. The advisory committee members come from business and industry and provide guidance for program development. Committee members meet several times each year to give input on program curricula in order to ensure that training addresses the needs of business, industry and the community. The program advisory committees play a key role in the success of Lake Tech and perform an important service to the students and citizens of Lake County.
On February 20th, Lake Tech is having its first “Bring a Friend to School Day.” Guests will receive information about their friend’s program, attend several information sessions and tour the campus. Persons who do not have a friend enrolled in a program on campus may contact the Center at 589-2250, ext. 168, to learn how they can participate in the event.
